About ETHW ID Coin
ETHW ID Coin job is to map human-readable names like ‘alice.ethw’ to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, other cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ETHW ID also supports ‘reverse resolution’, making it possible to associate metadata such as canonical names or interface descriptions with Ethereum addresses.
ETHW ID has similar goals to DNS, the Internet’s Domain Name Service, but has significantly different architecture due to the capabilities and constraints provided by the Ethereum blockchain. Like DNS, ETHW ID operates on a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains, with the owner of a domain having full control over subdomains.
Top-level domains, like ‘.ethw’, are owned by smart contracts called registrars, which specify rules governing the allocation of their subdomains. Anyone may, by following the rules imposed by these registrar contracts, obtain ownership of a domain for their own use. ETHW ID also supports importing in DNS names already owned by the user for use on ETHW ID.
Because of the hierarchal nature of ETHW ID, anyone who owns a domain at any level may configure subdomains – for themselves or others – as desired. For instance, if Alice owns ‘alice.ethw’, she can create ‘pay.alice.ethw’ and configure it as she wishes.

ETHW ID Architecture
Resolvers are responsible for the actual process of translating names into addresses. Any contract that implements the relevant standards may act as a resolver in ETHW ID. General-purpose resolver implementations are offered for users whose requirements are straightforward, such as serving an infrequently changed address for a name. Each record type – cryptocurrency address, IPFS content hash, and so forth – defines a method or methods that a resolver must implement in order to provide records of that kind.
New record types may be defined at any time via the EIP standardization process, with no need to make changes to the ETHW ID registry or to existing resolvers in order to support them. Resolving a name in ETHW ID is a two-step process: First, ask the registry what resolver is responsible for the name, and second, ask that resolver for the answer to your query.
ETHW ID enabling your dapp
ETHW ID integration in an application encompasses several critical features, each of which can be implemented independently. While comprehensive ETHW ID integration is ideal, even basic support can be a huge benefit to users. Below, they outline three levels of ETHW ID integration. Level 1 is easily achieved and provides high impact for users, while levels 2 and 3 provide more functionality to your users, improving your dApp’s usability and your users’ experience interacting with your DApp.
Why Choose ETHW ID?
The first step to supporting ETHW ID in your application is making your application understand ETHW ID names, and accepting them anywhere an address is accepted. To understand how to do this, see Resolving Names. This makes it possible for users to update their ETHW ID names and have applications they used the name in automatically resolve to the new address, in the same way that you would expect your browser to automatically direct you to the new IP address if a site you use changes servers.
If possible, when a user enters an ETHW ID name instead of an address, remember the ETHW ID name, not the address it currently resolves to. If your application deals with user funds or other critical resources, you may want to keep track of the address a name resolves to and warn them when it changes, to ensure they are aware of the change.
