Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a significant shift for the blockchain’s execution layer. He suggested replacing the current Ethereum Virtual Machine bytecode with the RISC-V architecture to address ongoing scalability limitations.
Buterin believes adopting this change will substantially reduce the price of executing code on-chain. A detailed forum post on Ethereum Magicians showed him advocating for adopting the RISC-V open-source architecture because of its performance advantages.
As a replacement for x86 and ARM chip architectures, RISC-V creates a framework that enhances flexibility when inventing protocol-level innovations. Under appropriate circumstances, the switch to RISC-V architecture would enable a 100-fold reduction in the expenses of running EVM executions.
The concept is presented as a distant objective, yet Buterin clarified that it would not abandon EVM instantly. Ethereum should develop two operating systems that include EVM and RISC-V contracts to preserve full compatibility across all platforms.
The current EVM contract system will maintain its operational capabilities while RISC-V based contracts can operate seamlessly with existing ones. A separate interpreter is part of the proposal to transform EVM bytecode into RISC-V instructions that work with the system.
Ethereum Eyes Structural Evolution While Preparing Pectra Upgrade
Various blockchain networks currently analyze structures that resemble the architectural models under development. The PolkaVM integration into Polkadot during August 2023 allowed the network to execute multiple virtual machines through multiple execution layers. This operational strategy shares the principle with a proposal made by Buterin that eliminates the requirement for a complete network fork.
