When returning items at UPS Stores instead of closer free locations, only a minimal number may incur the $1 fee. Amazon provides various free drop-off locations nationwide – Whole Foods stores, Kohl’s locations, and Amazon store drop-off points among them – though customers were being charged extra fees by UPS for home pick-up or dropping packages off at Access Points within third-party businesses.
Processing customer returns can be an enormous financial drain for retailers, costing them millions each year in losses. According to data from the National Retail Federation, for every $1 billion of sales retailers face on average $165 million in merchandise returns.
Amazon has responded to this concern by creating a badge identifying frequently returned items; its “frequently returned item” label serves to alert customers who may experience high return rates and encourages them to review product details and ratings before purchasing these products according to USA Today in March.
Amazon provides free returns for items under 50 pounds purchased through their platform, making returns easy and cost-free for customers. Customers can verify whether an item meets this criterion by looking out for the “Free returns” label displayed alongside its price.
