How Can Choose Best Home Theater Systems
Finding the ideal home theater system requires taking into account various factors to ensure it fits your specific preferences and requirements. Here are a few key considerations that may help with this decision-making process:
Area Size and Layout: Whilst considering where and how you will install your home theater system, consider its intended function in relation to room size and layout. Larger rooms may require more powerful audio systems in order to effectively fill their space.
Audio Quality: For an engaging sound experience, consider systems supporting advanced audio technologies like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X for greater realism. Also take note of how many and type of speakers make up the system.
Video Quality: Choose a system capable of supporting high-resolution video formats like 4K or 8K to meet the capabilities of modern TVs and projectors.
Compatibility: Before choosing your home theater system, ensure it will work seamlessly with all of the devices currently connected, such as Blu-ray players, gaming consoles and streaming devices. Look out for different connectivity options like HDMI, USB or Bluetooth to make sure everything stays connected properly.
Opting for Systems With Wireless Capabilities: To minimize cable clutter and facilitate streaming from smartphones, tablets or other compatible devices. Wireless connectivity also offers convenience in terms of streaming media from these devices directly.
Smart Features: Consider systems equipped with intelligent features compatible with virtual assistants, like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, that enable voice control of your smart home ecosystem and seamless integration.
Research and read reviews about various brands and models before making your selection. Take into account manufacturer reputation as well as user feedback to gauge real world performance of the system.
Budget: Create a realistic budget based on your requirements. While high-end systems offer all the latest features, more cost-effective systems still deliver top performance.
Ease of Setup: Choose a system that’s user-friendly and simple to set up – some offer automatic calibration features that optimize audio settings based on your room acoustics.
Future Expandability: Keep in mind whether or not the system allows for future upgrades or additions; this is particularly essential if you intend on expanding your home theater setup over time.

15 Best Home Theater Systems for 2024
1. SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 ($1,200)
SVS understands what most home theater enthusiasts desire in a system: compact yet attractive speakers with simple operation and immersive surround sound capabilities. Their Prime Satellite 5.1 home theater system is one of their best sellers and for good reason: equipped with five of SVS’s incredible Prime Satellite speakers for front or rear sound projection, plus their legendary SB-1000 subwoofer (the bass is covered by their SB-1001 subwoofer). We think its great sound and looks make it far superior to similar priced competitors below; so much so, that we have adopted it for office testing purposes! In fact, we use it so often as our standard test system–we even use it when measuring other gear!
No matter how great its sound quality may be, the SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 lacks power and volume when compared with some of the more expensive systems below. Although each speaker in the system performs solidly individually, there’s no dedicated center speaker included – for ultra-clear dialogue fans who value crystal-clear dialogue the Q Acoustics 3010i may be superior, though both SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 and Q Acoustics are much more cost effective alternatives. We think SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 brings it all together more effectively than any other home theater system we tested – making this our top pick and our winner.
2. Klipsch Reference Dolby Atmos System ($340)
Klipsch offers an expansive selection of home theater speakers and packages at every price range, but for budget shoppers the Reference 5.14 Dolby Atmos system stands out as an outstanding budget pick. A top seller on this list, this system consists of five sleek speakers which produce powerful room-filling sound as well as a muscular subwoofer – an outstanding value considering speakers this small should never sound this good!
Keep in mind that the Klipsch Black Reference Theater Pack takes an older approach. There’s no wireless audio-check out the Enclave system below for wireless home theater options below $1,000-and the speakers don’t feature high-end plastic housing like some of our other options on this list. However, we still love its ease-of-use, sound quality and value–so we chose it as our top value pick in 2023!
3. Sonos 5.1 Surround Set ($2,096) (Best Home Theater Systems)
Sonos stands alone when it comes to wireless home theater systems, with their impressive 5.1 Surround Set being remarkable in its quality. Easy setup and use make the Arc soundbar the star player here; only wires attached to wall plugs need be visible here.
One of biggest complaints with previous Sonos systems was their lack of Dolby Atmos support, but that no longer poses a problem–the Arc handles it superbly; such is its power that had it not come at such a steep price, it may well have unseated VIZIO SB46514-F6 as both best Dolby Atmos system and best wireless system!
Price can sometimes be an issue when considering wireless home theater sound, so we must take it into account when considering our choices. Although the 5.1 Surround Set offers amazing wireless home theater sound quality, its near $2,500 price may not make sense in our opinion. Other affordable options may be more suitable;
VIZIO system is worth taking a look (but is not fully wireless), or less-expensive Enclave Audio CineHome HD 5.1 are both worthwhile considerations; yet even with its higher cost we think the 5.1 Surround Set offers exceptional wireless home theater sound; note however that this system contains the older Sonos Sub instead of its smaller Sub Mini counterpart; should you want that, please purchase separately although expect this change within months.
4. Enclave Audio CineHome II 5.1 ($897)
Home theater speakers are becoming more prevalent, and we recommend the Enclave Audio CineHome HD 5.1 as one of your choices. At around half the cost of its rival – the Sonos 5.1 Surround Set (above), this alternative has some clever technologies such as creating its own Wi-Fi network so it doesn’t need to join one already in place in your home.
Something the Sonos system doesn’t do; therefore if dropout issues on your network already or imminently become an issue then this might be ideal solution – although Sonos overall is superior overall but may have its downsides when connected to existing networks – something the CineHome HD 5.1 can do without.
On the downside, however, while its technology may be superior, its sound quality falls a bit short of expectations. Audio doesn’t sound quite as rich or powerful compared to something like VIZIO M-Series which costs less. That may make purchasing this unit something you should carefully consider; nevertheless it still delivers good, albeit not great sound if you need a convenient home theater option like Enclave Audio CineHome HD 5.1 is an uncommon and effective home cinema choice.
5. Klipsch 7.1 Home Theater System ($3,844)
Klipsch provides the finest 7.1 surround sound systems on the market today. Their home theatre packages, especially this incredible system featuring their giant RP-8000F floorstanding speakers, are absolutely phenomenal in terms of audio quality and power output. Aperion and Martin Logan products cannot compare; Klipsch stands alone as being an exceptional option that delivers on its promises despite being more costly.
Klipsch are notorious for regularly rotating their packages and product names can make it hard to know exactly which system you want – often it won’t even be this one, which truly stands out. We partnered it with an outstanding Denon AVR-X3700H receiver which will bring out all its Dolby Atmos modules inside those massive speakers; making for an exceptional combination.
6. VIZIO M-Series 5.1.2 ($389)
Imagined Dolby Atmos systems tending towards four figures as being ideal. But our opinion is otherwise. For us, an effective Dolby Atmos home theater package should deliver great Atmos without breaking the bank or taking up too much room in our homes and budgets. Enter the VIZIO M-Series 5.1.2 soundbar-based package which we believe provides stunning Dolby Atmos sound quality.
It boasts an extremely user-friendly setup process and amazing audio performance – qualities which set it apart from competitors. Only a select few systems under $1,000 offer full Atmos functionality, and VIZIO M-Series stands out. In terms of audio detail, other soundbar-based systems like Sonos 5.1 Surround Set offer more, but don’t provide this Atmos functionality; therefore if Atmos is what you seek then VIZIO has your back!
If your room exceeds 250 square feet – in other words, is large – then the VIZIO M-Series 5.1.2 won’t cut it as it doesn’t have enough raw power to fill your entire space. Instead, an Atmos system such as Aperion Audio Novus 5.0.2 may be more appropriate, however for most people a VIZIO soundbar package will more than suffice, providing excellent height imaging while improving movie-watching experiences.
VIZIO often updates their product line with similar packages at similar price points if that has changed before we’re able to update this article – don’t despair as VIZIO often updates their product lines faster than us! Chances are good that there may be something similar available from them with similar functionalities and price structures available from them, unlike us!
7. Jamo S 805 HCS ($547) (Top Home Theater Systems)
Jamo offers some of the finest affordable home theater packages around, and their S 805 HCS doesn’t break their winning streak. Built around their 805 series speakers – which include floorstanders featuring solid performance as well as dialogue articulation capabilities – Jamo are certainly worthy rivals to SVS Prime, although for many we prefer SVS’ all black color scheme and better design features. In our view they even make an ideal alternative to Klipsch Black Reference Theater Pack with sleeker looks and improved design features compared to those provided by Klipsch!
One thing to keep in mind when reviewing the Jamo S 805 HCS is its lack of Atmos readiness. Dolby Atmos requires upward-firing speaker drivers aimed directly at your ceiling (or wall-mounted speakers pointing toward your couch), something the S 805 floorstanders don’t support natively (they require additional components which you must purchase separately).
So don’t be fooled: as is, this basic 5.1 system cannot play Dolby Atmos audio; which may lead to disappointment among customers purchasing sight unseen; check our buying advice section below for more on Dolby Atmos and how it works; although that marketing hype aside, the S 805 HCS home theater speakers provide capable and powerful performance!
8. Focal Sib Evo 5.1.2 ($1,359)
More manufacturers are including up-firing Dolby Atmos modules directly into their speakers, including France’s Focal with their Sib Evo 5.1.2 system featuring elegant curved speaker design. We found its Dolby Atmos implementation solid; though we think its slightly more expensive Sonos Surround 5.1 Set may do a better job overall.
Because individual speakers can be placed individually rather than using a soundbar like in Sonos’ system, Focal may be better for users who prefer customizing the positioning themselves rather than depending on a sound bar like what can be found with Sonos systems like Sonos Surround 5.1 Set or Sonos Surround 5.1 Set.
However, the Sib Evo 5.1.2 system does contain one particularly annoying element. While other speakers offer external binding posts for attaching speaker wire, the Sib Evo’s speakers use tiny ports which only accept bare wire and can make setup more of a challenge – though in our view its end results make up for any difficulties experienced during setup.
9. Wharfedale DX-2 ($399)
Wharfedale have made significant inroads into the home theater world over recent years, and we encourage anyone shopping for a system to carefully consider them. Their DX-2 package – an upgrade on their old DX-1HCP offering – boasts one key advantage over competing systems. Wharfedale have designed five satellite speakers that are miniscule compared to those found on Sonos systems–making this system ideal for small rooms and those seeking to conserve space.
Crucially, Wharfedale have achieved this without compromising sound quality. Although other systems that cost only slightly more such as the VIZIO M-Series offer clearer audio, such as those found below, we find the Wharfedale considerably less costly – though still capable of outdoing our top budget pick, the Monoprice 133832 system. But they provide an excellent alternative option.
Wharfedale DX-2 system’s only drawback is its limited availability. Wharfedale is based in the UK, so while we have seen their systems online and at dealers from time to time (sometimes on Amazon), it has become harder and harder to come by recently – even their US portal only currently stocks old packages with higher costs which have gone out of stock! These circumstances prevent us from giving this system higher marks regardless of its quality performance – maybe in time this may change though!
10. Polk Audio 5.1 Bundle ($1,023)
Most packages on this list offer standard 5.1 packages with five surround speakers and a subwoofer. However, if you require less speakers or already own one subwoofer then we would suggest the Polk Audio 5.1 Bundle instead. This package’s advantage lies in allowing you to pick exactly the speakers and components that meet your needs – from three speakers with a receiver to five without subwoofer – without hassle or excessive spending. Not to mention its solid construction, attractive price and flexibility (you could spend more or less depending on your needs); something other packages such as Yamaha YHT-4950U don’t provide.
One drawback of the Polk Audio 5.1 Bundle is its limited sound quality compared to other packages on our list, particularly dialogue which often sounds thin. Furthermore, we don’t like its subwoofer and believe there are better options available; nevertheless, any package which allows for customization deserves to be on this list; other packages don’t provide such freedom! Also keep in mind that their name changes often (it used to be known as T Series Bundle); we may have trouble keeping up.
11. RSL CG3 5.1 ($999) (Best Home Theater Systems)
RSL (RogerSound Labs) makes one of the best subwoofers we’ve heard: the Speedwoofer. When we learned they had also created an entire home theater speaker package around it – the CG3 5.1 – we were delighted. After listening, it proved worth waiting; bass performances surpassed more expensive packages such as Enclave CineHome HD 5.1; it delivered explosions and gunshots that felt as if they were coming right through to you chest! Give this package a chance!
RSL’s CG3 5.1 system falls short in our opinion, due to subpar speakers outside of its bass performance. When put up against SVS Prime Satellite’s slightly more expensive SVS Prime Satellite system – our top pick – its surround speakers easily outshone those of RSL CG3. RSL may want you to “place the new speakers atop existing speaker towers and see their friends react when you reveal that it’s not actually them they are listening to – we know from experience they won’t! “; instead their reaction will probably be “Yes, so what?”
12. Q Acoustics 3010i Cinema Pack ($1,142)
The Q Acoustics 3010i Cinema Pack is an upgrade to their original 3000i system that not only is considerably cheaper but also offers improved internal electronics and crisper sound quality – especially dialogue depth! As one of only a handful of manufacturers who manages to straddle both hi-fi and home theater without breaking, we believe this system offers a suitable alternative to SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 systems available today.
SVS system surpasses Q Acoustics 3010i Cinema Pack when it comes to bass reproduction. Though the Q 3060S may boast slim lines and attractive aesthetics, its sound can be far from impressive – its bass is too big and uncontrolled, while side firing drivers make positioning tricky enough. This is rather odd given that Q Acoustics offers excellent subwoofers such as Q B12 that might make this package better overall if only this issue could be overcome; otherwise this home theater package provides competent, high performing entertainment experience.
13. Yamaha YHT-4950U ($600)
Let’s be realistic: many people just need an affordable home theater system that provides great surround sound. If that describes you, we strongly suggest the Yamaha YHT-4950U as it has sold exceptionally well over its lifespan – its popularity speaks for itself! These compact speakers deliver crisp and impressive audio that works especially well when watching movies, plus additional features which put this model over the edge. We think its size makes it worth every penny. Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming and Yamaha’s YPAO room calibration make this package perfect. There is even an AV receiver included – giving you everything needed to get going.
What you lose out on: At higher volumes, the YHT-4950U tends to distort slightly and cause distortion if played at top volumes; if that is something you prefer doing regularly then other solutions might be better; one option might be Onkyo HT-S5800 which offers great sound but distorting slightly when played loud. All in all though, sound here was good rather than spectacular and though its performance has aged slightly, we’d much rather recommend something affordable like the YHT-4950U rather than try pushing newer and more expensive models at you – great home theater shouldn’t come at a cost and we think this one certainly does deliver.
14. Fluance Elite Series ($815)
Fluance stands out as one of the few manufacturers still producing dedicated 7.1 speaker systems, so it should come as no surprise that they make our list. While their Elite Series may not match up to their top-ranked Signature Series in terms of sound quality and price point, its audio is crisp and realistic and excels at providing great detail. If you can look past its 1970s styling though, then the Elite Series stands as one of the top speaker systems under $1,000.
Pioneer and Integra receivers work especially well with Fluance speaker systems, and we’re pleased to add Yamaha’s RX-V685 receiver as one of our favorite affordable options available to us for use with them. While it does feature only four HDMI ports, it remains one of our top picks when it comes to affordable speakers for Fluance systems.
15. Monoprice 133832 ($235) (Best Home Theater Systems)
Monoprice stands out as both one of the most impressive and frustrating companies we have come across, producing top-of-the-line home theater gear at incredible value prices – such as its 13.3832 5.1.4 system that incorporates Dolby Atmos height speakers for under $300. Unfortunately, their availability can fluctuate, making tracking down their packages increasingly challenging; but we strongly suggest you give this package serious consideration if you want a basic system with outstanding value for your dollar!
This system delivers solid yet unspectacular audio performance. Height audio is its main draw, though don’t expect miracles as this may be one of few systems at this price range to offer it. Though packages from Yamaha may offer better low end packages than Monoprice 133832 does, we think its amount more than justifies its purchase and recommend the Monoprice 33309 system (though that option was no longer available new at time of writing).
What features should I look for in a sound system?

Design and Aesthetics: Your speakers’ design should complement the overall decor of the room in which they will be placed. Some sound systems offer sleek designs while others may boast classic or premium aesthetics.
Brand Reputation and Reviews: Research the brand and read user reviews to get an understanding of its real-world performance and reliability.
Expandability and Upgradability: When purchasing sound system upgrades it must meet both criteria of expandability and upgradability.
