2. This is Basil (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

Basil Pad Kra Pao in Bangkok offers delicious pad kra pao meals. Situated near Icon Siam, they feature five types of meat for your pad kra pao: ground pork, sai krok isan (fishcake), duck and beef; plus they offer optional add-ons as well.

This is Basil (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

Below you can see a classic ground pork pad kra pao dish served with fried egg and crispy chicken skin for extra crunchiness. I ordered mine with medium level spice heat – enough heat for me – while those looking for an even higher level can add ghost peppers if they prefer.

Fried chicken skin may not be the healthiest food, but its delicious crunch adds texture to pad kra pao dishes. This is Basil is not technically its own restaurant – rather, its part of Save Our Souls craft beer and burger restaurant near Icon Siam that offers mostly Western comfort food, yet offers pad kra pao dishes from This is Basil on their last page of menu options.

3. Gaggan Anand

Gaggan Anand is an internationally acclaimed and groundbreaking Indian chef residing in Bangkok, Thailand. He was responsible for founding one of Bangkok’s most celebrated dining establishments – Gaggan – until its closure in 2019. Gaggan earned two Michelin stars while operating and was regularly listed among the best restaurants globally.

Gaggan Anand is widely revered for his creative approach to Indian cuisine, fusing traditional flavors with modernist culinary techniques. His 25-course tasting menu offered diners an unforgettable dining experience, including dishes like “Lick it Up”, a deconstructed version of traditional street food; and “Charcoal,” an edible replica of charcoal made from dried potatoes.

Gaggan Anand

His restaurant, Gaggan, epitomised his avant-garde style and won him many accolades, including top billing on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list four times consecutively (2015-2018).

After the closure of Gaggan, Chef Gaggan Anand embarked on new ventures. One such endeavor included opening “Gaggan Anand” restaurant in Bangkok; which might offer diners something new while still showcasing his culinary artistry and dedication to pushing Indian cuisine forward. For up-to-date information regarding his endeavors it’s best to refer to sources such as restaurant websites, news articles or social media pages run by Chef Gaggan Anand himself.

4. Sorn (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

“Sorn” is an award-winning restaurant located in Bangkok, Thailand that is highly-revered for promoting traditional Southern Thai cuisine while emphasizing authenticity and heritage.

Chef Supaksorn Jongsiri, more popularly known as “Chef Ice,” leads this restaurant. Chef Ice is passionate about preserving and sharing the distinct, yet lesser-known flavors of Southern Thailand; featuring recipes and ingredients with roots deep within regional culinary traditions.

Sorn (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

At Sorn, guests can indulge in a multi-course tasting menu that takes them on an aromatic tour through Southern Thailand’s diverse and rich culinary landscape. Dishes feature local seafood, fresh herbs and aromatic spices for an array of flavors on the palate.

Sorn’s elegant and refined ambience adds an exquisite dining experience, creating an inviting and intimate setting in which to savor our carefully prepared dishes. Thanks to its outstanding quality and unique approach to Southern Thai cuisine, Sorn has received much deserved acclaim and praise from food enthusiasts worldwide – becoming an unparalleled dining destination.

5. Sühring

Mathias and Thomas Suhring, twinned siblings who own one of Asia’s finest restaurants – Gaggan Anan – have joined forces to elevate German cuisine. Suhring serves up either nine or twelve-serving tasting menus which modernize classic German dishes. However, the true highlight is Brotzeit:

Homemade sourdough is topped with butter, crispy pork skin strips, sour-and-spicy sauce pretzel and charcoal grilling before being wrapped in foil and served alongside aged Black Forest ham and homemade sauerkraut – creating one of Bangkok’s best breads!

6. Potong (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

Potong was her Hokkien great-great-grandfather who, over 130 years ago, established a pharmacy in Thailand named for him and popularized a herbal potion sold today that still bears his name.

At Potong the Restaurant, the age-old traditions of Chinese immigrants come to the fore. “The beauty of Thai-Chinese cuisine lies in how it brings together cultures like those found among Hokkien and Teochew settlers as they adapt their food styles for life in Thailand,” according to Chef Pam.

Potong (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

“5 Elements, 5 Senses” is a tasting menu that showcases Chef Pam’s progressive cooking. Each course ties back into stories from Chef Pam’s childhood and background; for instance one course features steamed black chicken served with riceberry rice cooked in pork stomach and infused with more than 20 herbs along with a vinegar drink – which may not be familiar to contemporary diners but she hopes will become part of their palates once again! Black chicken was something she enjoyed as a child so this dish brings it back onto tables once again.

Dim sum and roasted barbecue, two classic dishes we are familiar with, are offered in more contemporary presentations.

Potong’s team of chefs carefully craft many ingredients used for its multi-course meal in-house, from soy sauce and miso to fermented tea and fermented tea brewing. Dedication to detail can be seen throughout – for instance in serving 14-day dry-aged duck, barbecued Angus beef and stir-fried Chinese kale served all together with six dipping sauces.

7. Jay Fai

Foodies of both local and foreign descent know Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta well. Culinary critics hail her as the queen of street food and recently featured her in Netflix documentary Street Food. Since opening his humble restaurant nearly 40 years ago, this 74 year-old chef has been crafting what may well be Bangkok’s most expensive street fare.

Locals and visitors alike queue up outside this restaurant for hours on end to taste its signature crab omelet at just one thousand baht; an exquisite fluffy treat filled with chunks of premium crab that truly justifies its price. Also popular are their rard na (noodles in thick gravy sauce) and drunken noodles packed with seafood; be aware that outside beverages, including orange juice from pad thai parlor next door, are strictly forbidden from being brought inside!

8. Baan Kuay Tiew Ruathong

Boat noodles should definitely make any list of must-try Thai cuisine in Bangkok. Boat noodles refers to an intensely flavorful Thai noodle dish made with pork or beef along with ingredients like fish balls, crushed peanuts, herbs, garlic and dark soy sauce; what makes it uniquely delectable and extra satisfying is its dark broth made richer with the addition of either pig’s blood or cow’s blood for seasoning purposes.

Boat noodles can be prepared in various ways. At Baan Kuay Tiew Ruathong, there are six distinct versions to try both with or without soup – my personal favorite being their classic boat noodle soup with pork which was extremely flavorful! I believe it to be one of the most delectable noodle soups you’ll find in Bangkok!

This delectable Thai dish first made its debut as a street vendor-sold option along Bangkok’s canals in the 1940s, hence its name. Prepared in small portions to enable easy passing without spillage of the broth, this tasty treat remains made up of multiple small bowls which customers typically devour all at once. Boat noodle soup with beef was prepared here and sold for just THB 16 (about USD 0.50). You could eat one bowl within three or four bites!

9. Somtum Der (Best Restaurants In Bangkok)

Somtum Der is an esteemed restaurant in Bangkok specializing in traditional Isaan cuisine, including its namesake dish “Som Tum,” a spicy green papaya salad. Distinguished for serving authentic Northeastern Thai flavors and dishes while highlighting Isaan cuisine’s vibrant tastes, Somtum Der has earned widespread acclaim among diners who visit its location.

Somtum Der is located in the heart of Bangkok and provides a selection of Som Tum variations made with fresh ingredients and an array of spicy, sweet, sour and salty flavors – providing guests with an authentic Isaan dining experience! Additionally, Somtum Der offers classic Isaan dishes like grilled meats, spicy salads and sticky rice dishes; offering visitors a comprehensive sampling of its culinary treats.

Somtum Der’s inviting and casual dining environment combined with attentive service create a wonderful dining experience, pleasing both locals and tourists. Thanks to their dedication in maintaining authentic Thai flavors, Somtum Der has garnered excellent reviews from both visitors and locals, and remains one of the premier destinations for an Isaan dining experience in Bangkok.

10. Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu

Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu is owned by Chef Andy Yang, the first Thai chef ever awarded with a Michelin Star in 2010. After receiving this recognition for Rhong-Tiam in New York City in 2010, upon returning home he opened Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu on Dinso Road and made its mark in Bangkok Michelin street food guide.

Chef Yang’s pad thai costs at least double what’s typically found in Bangkok, initially offputting me because of its higher price and smaller portion. One bite made all the difference – made with sticky, gooey rice noodles and big succulent prawns it was easily the best pad thai I have ever tasted and it was unbelievably delicious!

Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu

Pad thai with Berkshire pork was also our favorite variation of pad thai. According to their menu description, they first boil their pork in herbal soup before air-chilling it and smoking before finally deep-frying in its own oil to produce supremely crunchy chunks that pair perfectly with soft and sticky rice noodles – perfect if you love pork belly! If this dish sounds intriguing then don’t miss it.

Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu has two locations in Bangkok – Siam Square and Dinso Road. Dinso Road’s original branch was featured in the 2023 Bangkok Michelin street food guide (although technically, more like an elegant restaurant).

Conclusion

Bangkok is truly a culinary wonderland, boasting an extraordinary variety of international culinary treats from every corner of the globe. Its vibrant restaurant scene caters to every palette and preference imaginable, making Bangkok the ultimate foodie paradise. Michelin-star fine dining establishments to humble street food vendors – everything is available here in this bustling metropolis.

Bangkok’s finest restaurants stand as testaments to the city’s culinary prowess and innovation. Gaggan Anand’s progressive Indian cuisine, Nahm’s refined Thai flavors and Suhring’s inventive German dishes are just a few examples of what lies ahead for visitors. And those seeking authentic Thai street food experiences shouldn’t miss Jay Fai’s legendary crab omelet or Somtum Der’s traditional Isaan delights as must-try options.

As Bangkok’s restaurant scene evolves, exciting culinary spaces like “Baan Tepa Culinary Space” may have emerged to further elevate dining experiences. No matter where one chooses to dine in Bangkok, every dining experience will offer unforgettable flavors, textures, and tastes that will leave every food enthusiast wanting more!
