The game developers always envisioned making Decentraland fully decentralized by handing over the control to the people who contribute and participate in its virtual world. Through the Decentraland DAO, community members can determine how things work in Decentraland, such as content moderation, Land policy, auctions, and more. Everything is determined by voting on the Decentraland DAO’s governance interface powered by Aragon.
Why has the DAO been created? How is it relevant to me?
Decentraland is the first fully decentralized virtual world. It was always part of the original vision to hand over control to the people who create and play in this virtual space. In short – you, the users. Through the DAO, you are in control of the policies created to determine how the world behaves: for example, what kinds of wearable items are allowed (or disallowed) after the launch of the DAO, moderation of content, LAND policy and auctions, among others.
How does the DAO work?
The community will propose and vote on policy updates, future LAND auctions, whitelisting of NFT contracts to be allowed inside the World, Builder and Marketplace, and whatever the community deems relevant. Voting takes place on the Decentraland DAO’s governance interface, powered by Aragon.

Reward System in The Decentraland
Once launched, the reward system in The Decentraland will vary from plot to plot, with each game creating its own play-to-earn experience. So far, the Sandbox Alpha tests have handed out rewards in a lottery system, with those completing more quests and engaging more with social media receiving more entries. Some players who completed all of the quests or certain sub-sections of the Alpha were awarded secondary prizes.
Governance
The Decentraland will follow a DAO structure and DAO is the governance token. Holders of the token can take part in key decision-making regarding the future of the platform. Such key issues include Foundation grant attributions to content and game creators and feature prioritization on the platform Roadmap. SAND owners can also delegate voting rights to other players of their choice.
MARKETPLACE
As the name implies, The Decentraland Marketplace will allow the users to upload, publish, and sell their objects (ASSETS) that they have created in VoxEdit as tokens (both ERC-721 and ERC-1155 tokens).

The Team Behind Decentraland
Decentraland was conceptualized in a detailed whitepaper written by Esteban Ordano, Ariel Meilich, Yemel Jardi, and Manuel Araoz. It’s also worth noting that they got some help from notable experts such as Michael Bosworth from Google, Jon Choi from Dropbox, Jake Brukham from CoinFund, and so forth.
The team’s vision became a reality on February 20th, 2020 (20.02.2020), when Decentraland went live to the public. The launch included the establishment of the Decentraland DAO, as well as the full decentralization of the world’s infrastructure and the public access to what it had to offer.
It was an important moment in Decentraland’s development roadmap because, after it, no single entity was ever able to single-handedly modify the rules of its code stack.
While there are no verified sources of information revealing the current playebrase of Decentraland, the fact that it has grown to become one of the leading metaverse-based virtual realities in the blockchain industry right now (as of writing these lines in January 2022) is undeniable.
