The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has helped in providing legal assistance to developers of Tornado Cash Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev. According to an update from the Juicebox initiative “Free Pertsev and Storm” on December 31, Buterin donated 50 ETH
Which is about $170,000 at this point in time. Around 25% of the $650,000 they already have with JusticeDAO in order to finance their legal defense is Nikovoti’s donation. The initiative is very important in assisting these developers in dealing with the law.
Buterin Remains a Supporter of the Tornado Cash Developers
Buterin previously contributed 100 ETH equivalent to around $240,000, around the month of October which shows he is still dedicated to assisting the development of Tornado Cash as the debate about government control in the crypto environment increases.
2022 marked the year that began the legal nightmares for the Tornado Cash team after Dutch law enforcement apprehended Alexey Pertsev charging him with participating in money laundering schemes, involving the use of a crypto service that focused on privacy. Pertsev was sentenced in May 2024 to over five years imprisonment on being guilt and is currently appealing the ruling.
At the same time, US prosecutors have pursued criminal charges against Roman Storm and Roman Semenov including money laundering, violation of sanctions, and fraud, those countries sanctioned by the US treasury in 2022 from using Tornado Cash which was featured among the Specially Designated Nationals list.
Storm was granted bail and is scheduled for a trial on April 14 while Semenov is on run, these charges belong to the same category and included money laundering of over $7 billion, inclusive of the North Korean hacking.
The crackdown and persecution has received outsized criticism from the crypto community who highlights that attacking the developers of such projects defeats the purpose of decentralized technology and freedom of the individual. Coin Center and Tornado Cash users, with support from Coinbase, have filed lawsuits contesting the Treasury’s moves.
November saw an appellate court ruling that the Treasury went too far by placing a ban on the smart contracts associated with Tornado Cash. Storm and Pertsev remain undeterred by this ruling since the criminal cases against them are still underway.
Buterin Meets Elon Musk Who Is Challenging The Way People Rant On X
Buterin is reportedly on Elon Musk’s side suggesting that he should control the way he expresses his opinions on X during a heated debate about foreign IT employees based in the USA.
In a Dec 31 post, Buterin accepted Musk’s belief in free speech, however he encouraged him to “turn down the temperature” on the discussions on the site.
Buterin wrote a comment in response to Musk who has posted a profanity-filled screed defending the rights of H1B visa immigrants against abuse at the hands of American users arguing the policy is anti-native American worker.
Other critics accused “Musk of censorship”. Some of these accusers claim their accounts were taken away premium features because they’ve been expressive in disapproving of Musk’s behaviours.
Buterin disclaimed the ability to choose over opinions, but reminded the ability to disagree while maintaining the principles of free speech is more important because the “banhammers” of social media’s centralized control can move randomly.
Musk’s controversies on a topic have sparked off the arguments regarding freedom of speech and how much moderation platforms should do.
